When Mount Everest was first conquered in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and the Sherpa named Norgay Tenzing they only had fifteen minutes to enjoy the view before they had to turn round and make their arduous return to base camp. Even though those fifteen minutes might have been long enough for a game of bingo, this was the very last thing they had on their minds. It is also unlikely that in all the subsequent assents of this, the highest mountain, that bingo was even considered by the many mountaineers who have made their journey to and from it, several perishing on the way. But that is about to change. Mark Simm, a bingo hall manager and bingo playing fan, plans to play the highest game of bingo ever played.
Mark Simm manages a bingo hall in Blackburn. He will lead a team of twenty four other players to Everest for a game of bingo. It will not be played at the mountains peak it is admitted, but it will be played at the Everest base camp which is at an altitude of 17,500 feet.
Getting to 17,500 feet is no easy task and required a considerable degree of fitness, stamina and strength. The climbers are taking part in an intensive training programme including long distance running, hill climbing and altitude training.
The exercise is all being carried out for the benefit of charity (as well as an entry in the Guinness Book of Records). The charity is Sue Ryder Care which provides help for people with long term or terminal conditions. The intrepid players plan to raise £100,000 for this charity.
All the climbers are employees of Gala Bingo and come from various locations in England. They are all looking forward to the trip and to the game. They plan to start the trip from Luca on 19 October and to actually play their game of bingo at base camp five days later.
